Fantasia after Brahms

Piano Duet (Op. 7, No. 1)  and

Piano Solo  (Op. 7, No. 2)

A short video: Introducing Fantasia after Brahms

Due to be published by E.V.C. Publications Ltd. in 2020.

Programme Note

While not intended to ‘mimic’ the musical style of Johannes Brahms (1833 – 1897), this music intentionally throws an affectionate nod in the direction of the great man.

The piece, (particularly the duet version), is much easier to play than almost any piano music by Brahms and the score includes optional notes shown in small ‘cue size’ (known as “ossia”), to help players with small hands for example, while not holding back more flamboyant and/or ambitious pianists.

The first performance was given in piano duet form, as an overture to a theatrical production at Cheney School, Oxford in 1975. The performers where Chris Banks and Mark Goddard.

About Time — Six Piano Preludes

Available from EVC Publications

Mark Goddard

Whilst each of the preludes in this suite is distinct in character, they all share the composer’s trademark use of contrasting time signatures, pulsating rhythms and dramatic energy. These pieces (Grades 6-8 ABRSM levels), with their Latin names harking back to a different age, provide the more advanced pianist with a musically challenging and rewarding depiction of different attitudes towards time.

Tempus Fugit (Time Flies) and Momentum are both influenced by jazz and have lively Eastern European folk dance rhythms. Momento Temporis (A Moment in Time) is tranquil and modal, with sonorous pedalling, whilst the harmonies in Perpetuum Mobile often employ familiar diatonic language and use chords based on the intervals of the second and fourth. Tempus Rerum Imperator (Time, Commander of All Things) is a spiky, urgent and chromatic evocation of time running away with us while the final prelude, Ab Aeterno, (From Time Immemorial) is a dark evocation of eternity, with just one chord deployed in a series of mathematical progressions, using rhythmical diminution and augmentation to outline a journey.

What Do You Dream About?  (SP1307)      available from Spartan Press

Duration: 10 minutes.  These light hearted Surreal Reveries were composed as part of Spartan’s 25th anniversary year celebrations and there’s quite a story attached to them: The Spartan Press team organised a ‘brainstorming’ session (as they often do) to help with deciding on definitive titles for each of the pieces, but we generated so many good ideas that we simply couldn’t decide what to do: so we invite you, the pianist, to provide your own titles! The full results of our production meeting were entertaining and illuminating, and so we’ve reproduced them for your entertainment on page 15. In the score, we have at least gone as far as associating each movement with an appropriate ’emoticon’, just for the fun of it. Grades c. 4 – 7.     Completed: 25th June, 2015

Bizet, arr: Goddard

The three best tunes from Carmen including ‘Toreador’s Song’. Bizet’s famous opera ‘Carmen’ was controversial when it was first performed in Paris in 1875. It is a tale of lawlessness, murder and immorality. The naive soldier Don José is seduced by the fiery gypsy Carmen, and deserts from the army, only to see Carmen desert him for the glamorous toreador Escamillo. Bizet died suddenly soon after the first ‘luke warm’ run of performances. Little did he know it would become acclaimed world wide for the next 130 years! The optional companion CD allows for each movement to be practised separately, (and slowly) before putting the whole thing together – ideally in the company of another human!    Completed: 15th October, 2012

Fugue For Ever!  (SP365)      available from Spartan Press

Bach, arr: Goddard

Bach’s glorious six part fugue from The Musical Offering made accessible in easy piano duet form by Mark Goddard. In 1747, Bach visited Frederick the Great of Prussia, and was invited by the King to improvise on a theme. On returning to Leipzig, Bach wrote out and revised his improvisations, dedicating the finished product to the King. Musikalisches Opfer contains ten canons, two keyboard fugues and a trio sonata in four movements for flute, violin and continuo. The subject of this piano duet arrangement is the six part fugue which in it’s original form requires an organist with a technique as adroit as Bach’s! Mark Goddard has successfully maintained the spirit of the original but ‘unlocked’ the technical demands of the keyboard writing.    Completed: 17th February, 1997
